Detailed Description

This Egyptian funerary mask panel made of vitrified faience beads constitutes a remarkable testimony to late and Ptolemaic funerary art (c. 664-332 BC). Forming a stylized face with typical iconographic characteristics, this piece perfectly illustrates the tradition of Egyptian bead-nets intended to accompany the deceased in the afterlife.

Analysis & expertise

Minute observation under 10× magnification and raking light reveals a tight and regular textile construction, with small annulated beads presenting a homogeneous glaze luster. Workshop micro-pits and slight chromatic heterogeneities attest to authentic ancient firings. Discrete alignment irregularities at corners, minute abrasions and residual blue ligature constitute convincing markers of ancient textile mounting.

The panel represents a stylized frontal face with a broad forehead, adorned with large almond-shaped eyes enhanced with black and cream under a dark eyebrow band. The nose and mouth are modulated in red-orange, creating a striking contrast with the dominant turquoise tones.

The back face presents the original textile weave with its peripheral support structure, testifying to the ancient mounting technique.

Edge and border

The perimeter is delimited by a continuous support border, with angle irregularities characteristic of original tensions. Natural sandy patina and minimal deposits lodged between the beads attest to authenticity.

Characteristics

Dimensions: 10.5 × 10.5 × 0.3 cm. Material: polychrome vitrified faience (blue-green/turquoise, yellow, cream, black, red-orange). The collar extends in alternating yellow/blue registers, respecting the late decorative vocabulary.

Historical context

Faience bead funerary masks accompanied the deceased from the New Kingdom until the Ptolemaic period. Sewn on the head and chest, they combined amuletic efficacy and visual brilliance. Blue-green, the color of Osirian renaissance, and black eyes guaranteed regeneration and vigilance in the afterlife.

Cultural value

This piece condenses funerary ritual, faience technique and color symbolism. Its graphic readability, preserved polychromy and intact weave make it an exceptional witness to late embalming and the protective iconography of Egyptian bead-nets.
