Detailed Description

This exceptional Neolithic polished axe in dolerite constitutes a remarkable testimony to the technological revolution of the Neolithic period. Dating from approximately 4,500 to 6,000 years ago, this emblematic tool perfectly illustrates the technical mastery achieved by prehistoric craftsmen of West Africa.

Analysis & expertise

Expertise reveals a certified authentic piece, presenting all the typological characteristics of a mature Neolithic polished axe. The operational chain is perfectly readable: initial shaping by pecking and pounding, followed by careful polishing particularly at the bevel level. This technique testifies to a major technological leap compared to crude knapping.

The main face presents a regular polished surface with conservation of original tool micro-markings, revealing the pecking and polishing technique characteristic of the period.

The opposite face shows perfectly balanced symmetrical morphology, with maintenance of the matte and tight mineral skin typical of dolerite.

Flan and edge

Fusiform profile with lenticular section with softened butt and symmetrical bevel. Authentic functional wear traces at the cutting edge level, testifying to effective use.

Characteristics

Dimensions: 110 × 50 mm. Material: dolerite, hard igneous rock with fine to medium grain, rich in iron and magnesium. Exceptional state of conservation without restoration.
