Detailed Description

This Christian oil lamp in terracotta represents a remarkable example of applied art from Late Antiquity. Dating from the 5th-6th centuries AD, it belongs to the Bussière E VIII 11 type and is distinguished by its particular iconography featuring a stylized dog.

Analysis & expertise

Minute examination under magnifying glass and raking light reveals a molded terracotta lamp of ovoid form, presenting a homogeneous brown-ochre archaeological patina. No modern restoration has been detected, confirming the authenticity of the piece. The state of conservation is remarkable with only slight chipping consistent with age.

The upper disc presents a figurative representation of a stylized dog in relief. The animal, with elongated muzzle and clearly individualized front paws, integrates harmoniously with the functional morphology of the lamp.

The reverse presents the typical characteristics of the Bussière E VIII 11 type with a smooth surface and homogeneous patina.

Flan and edge

The lamp presents a short and well-defined spout, a preserved central filling orifice, and an absence of handle, characteristics conforming to the established typology.
