Detailed Description

Hellenistic female marble head with tainia, sculpted fragment from the late 2nd-1st century BC. This work demonstrates the artistic refinement of ancient workshops during the transition between the Hellenistic and Roman periods.

Analysis & expertise

Detailed observation under 10x magnification and raking light revealing the authenticity of the fragment. The medium-grain marble shows natural calcitic veins and a homogeneous beige matte archaeological patina. No modern repainting or restoration observed.

Finely modeled female face showing a full oval, undrilled eyes characteristic of the period, a nose slightly damaged at the ridge, and full closed lips. Slight inclination of the head to the right conferring a serene presence.

Wavy hair treated in broad locks, girdled with a tainia (ribbon). The earlobes are pierced to receive metal pendants, a convincing detail conforming to ancient practices of mixed ornamentation.

Flan and edge

Ancient break at the neck level without structural weakness. Ancient micro-chips on the nose and chin. Natural calcitic crystalline patches surfacing on the hair and periphery.

Characteristics

Dimensions: 104 × 102 × 96 mm. Material: medium-grain marble with natural micro-cavities. Auricular piercings showing discrete internal oxidation compatible with ancient metal mounting.

Historical context

At the junction of the 2nd-1st centuries BC, Hellenistic formal idealism continued in the first Roman workshops. Female heads with tainia symbolize grace and dignity in a widely disseminated iconographic vocabulary.

Cultural value

Pedagogical piece illustrating the marble/metal interaction in ancient sculpture. Stylistic coherence with collections from the British Museum, Brooklyn Museum and Metropolitan Museum of Art, conferring certain museum interest.

Traceability & guarantees

Provenance from established European collections. Nominative authenticity certificate and expertise file provided. Transaction compliant with current regulations and art market standards.
