Detailed Description

Cruciform lead pendant dating from the Byzantine Early Middle Ages (7th-10th century AD), bearing witness to the daily piety of Christian communities in the Byzantine Empire.

Analysis & expertise

This robustly simple object displays an authentic greyish-green patina resulting from centuries of burial. The slightly granular surface reveals the noble oxidation of lead, with micro-fissures and rough spots constituting positive stigmata of time.

Latin cross with flared arms, clear molding still perceptible despite wear. Cruciform relief remains legible with projecting arms retaining their volume.

Surface displaying the same homogeneous patina as the obverse, with natural multi-century deposits attesting to authenticity.

Flan and edge

Balanced proportions with regular abrasions at the extremities, interpretable as marks of prolonged devotional wear.

Characteristics

Dimensions: 27 mm × 20 mm. Material: molded lead. Condition: good general state with homogeneous wear valued as witness to ancient use.

Historical context
